Who are we?
We are a group of Eastbourne residents that came together to campaign
on the injustices in the international market. We believe
that trade could have an enormous positive impact on development in the
Third world if it were used to benefit those most in need. By
campaigning for Fairtrade we are taking responsiblity for our shopping
habits so that the producers down the line are treated fairly and can
improve their lives.
Our Fairtrade steering group members are:
Matt
Wilkinson - Group Chair
Miriam
Miklaszewska - Secretary
Kate Sutcliffe -
Treasurer
Clive Gross - Chair 2005 - 2007, Spokesperson
Marie
Tomblin- Events Co-ordinator
Stephen Brown
- Churches Co-ordinator
Nick Webb
- Web Organiser
What is Fairtrade ?
The Fairtrade Mark is an independent consumer label which appears on
products as an independent guarantee that disadvantaged producers in
the developing world are getting a better deal. For a product
to display the Fairtrade Mark it must meet international
Fairtrade standards. These standards are set by the international
certification body Fairtrade Labelling Organisations International
(FLO).
Producer organisations that supply Fairtrade products are inspected and
certified by FLO. They receive a minimum price that covers the cost of
sustainable production and an extra premium that is invested in social
or economic development projects.
The Fairtrade Mark 5 guarantees:
1. The Fairtrade Mark guarantees farmers a fair
and stable price for their products
2. The Fairtrade Mark guarantees extra income for
farmers and estate workers to improve their lives.
3. The Fairtrade Mark guarantees a greater respect
for the environment
4. The Fairtrade Mark guarantees small farmers a
stronger position in world markets
5. The Fairtrade Mark guarantees a closer link
between consumers and producers
What do we do in
Eastbourne?
We reach out to the community, including businesses,
schools, shoppers, churches, organisations and other campaign groups
community, to boost awareness of Fairtrade and its aims. We want to see
more Fairtrade products available and we want a
genuine demand for Fairtrade locally. We are
campaigning to make Eastbourne a Fairtrade Town and have put on
different events across the town to promote Fairtrade. Check our
campaign pages to see what we're up to.
