| MP signs against new coal power |
18/07/08 |
Eastbourne MP Nigel
Waterson added his name to a list of people and
organisations calling on the Government to halt its plans to
build a new
generation coal-fired power stations. E.ON’s application to build the
station at Kingsnorth will emit over eight million tonnes of
carbon dioxide every year and was approved by the Local Counci.
Greenpeace
is warning that if the PM gives the green light to a new coal-fired
station at Kingsnorth in Kent it would lock Britain into huge carbon
emissions for decades and signal Brown’s surrender on the UK’s
long term climate change targets.
Nigel
Waterson MP said “We
all agree on the need to tackle climate change, so it is bizarre
that this Government want to embark on a massive development of new
coal power stations. We are all paying the price for their lack
of a coherent energy policy. There should be a full public
inquiry into this flawed plan. 'Business as usual' is no answer
to climate change.” Visit the

| Council supports Human Rights in China |
30/04/08 |
Eastbourne Amnesty International Chair
Councillor Greg Szanto put forward a motion to the Borough Council on
Wednesday 30th April to support Human Rights in China. The motion
called on "the Government of the UK, the International Olympic
Committee and corporate sponsors to use their influence by condemning
the failure of the Chinese Government to honour its commitment and
improve its human rights record." Councillor Szanto
reminded his fellow Councillors that while
bidding in April of 2001 for the 2008 Olympics, Liu Jingmin, the
Executive Vice President of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Bid
Committee, told the world: "By allowing Beijing to host the Games you
will help the development of human rights." but
he also defended the decision to hold the Games in China as it shines a
bright spotlight on the country's actions. The motion was passed
unanimously. Read the motion here.
