Fairtrade Eastbourne
Fairtrade
Eastbourne began in the spring of 2005 to campaign for Fairtrade
Town Status for Eastbourne and raise local awareness of
international trade injustices and how trade has massive potential
to improve lives in the developing world.
The
group has found a great deal of support locally and has put on many
events around the town. Visit the Fairtade Eastbourne website.

Nearby Brighton, Lewes and
Uckfield all have been
awarded Fairtrade Town
Status by the Fairtrade Foundation. To
be awarded this status the campaign group must demonstrate that
these criteria are met:
|
|
1.
The local council must pass a resolution
supporting Fairtrade, and serve Fairtrade coffee and tea at its
meetings and in offices and canteens.
|
|
2.
A range of Fairtrade products must be readily
available in the area’s shops and served in local
cafés
and catering establishments (targets are set in relation to
population)
|
| 3. Fairtrade products must be used by a
number of local work places (estate agents, hairdressers etc) and
community organisations (churches, schools etc) |
| 4. Attract media coverage and popular
support for the
campaign |
| 5. A local Fairtrade steering group
must be
convened to ensure continued commitment to Fairtrade Town
status. |

Current Campaign:
"Ask for Fairtrade" |
The
group is currently urging Eastbourne residents to "Ask for Fairtrade"
and to do so using their "Ask for Fairade" cards. Shoppers,
coffee drinkers and fashion followers can fill in the back of a card and
deliver it to the business to show a willingness to buy Fairtrade were it
offered. Cards are availble by contacting the group or from
the Fairtrading Post in the Enterprise Centre. |

|
The
group meets once a month a welcomes anyone who would like to come
along.
