Eastbourne Against Trident Replacement

The Government published a white paper on 4th December announcing plans to replace the UK's Trident Submarine Nuclear Weapons System.

Parliament will debate this paper in March and express its view through a vote.

The UK, as a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, has agreed to eventual disarmament in return for other countries not acquiring Nuclear Weapons.

Eastbourne Against Trident Replacement is campaigning to raise awareness of this issue locally.

Parliament voted through the Government plans to replace Trident.  Our Eastbourne MP, Nigel Waterson voted against an amendment delaying the decision and for the Bill to replace Trident.  A week before the vote Nigel was presented with the Eastbourne Against Trident Replacement petition of over 1300 signatures and was lobbied by campaigners from Greenpeace, the Catholic community and Eastbourne for Peace and Liberty.

The campaign against Trident will continue nationally.  To support this effort you could join CND by visiting www.cnduk.org

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. The world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children... This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron."

Former U.S. President, Dwight D. Eisenhower, in a speech on April 16, 1953
